National Donor Day 2022

Hugh’s Story

February 14th. is National Donor Day, an observance dedicated to spreading awareness and education about organ, eye, and tissue donation. National Donor Day is also a day to recognize those who have given and received the gift of life through organ, eye, and tissue donation, those  currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant, and those who died waiting because an organ was not donated in time.

We would like to introduce to you to one very special donor recipient who receives their medication from F and M pharmacy, a ReCept Pharmacy Company, they will be celebrating their transplant anniversary on the 18th of February.

To know Hugh, is to love him. When I met Hugh, I knew right away why a stranger would volunteer to donate a kidney to him. His captivating personality and infectious smile win you over immediately.

Hugh met his “living donor”, Mark Scotch, at a brewery in his hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana. At the time, Hugh was having to undergo ten hours of peritoneal dialysis every night while patiently waiting for a kidney. After their chance meeting, Mark wanted to donate a kidney directly to Hugh. They later discovered that Mark was not a match. Mark, however, was able to donate a kidney in Hugh’s name through the National Kidney Registry’s Donor Voucher Program. This program allowed Hugh to move to the top of the waiting list and receive a kidney from a different donor.

Seventeen people die each day waiting for an organ transplant, while another person is added to the list every nine minutes. One donor can save eight lives and enhance up to 75 more. Hugh uses his platform to raise awareness of the crucial need for living donors. Through sharing his story, he hopes he can help others receive the gift of life.

Thank you to those who have left a lasting legacy of life through organ and tissue donation and to everyone that is currently registered as a donor.
